How To Get Recruiters To Actually Read Your Resume
How To Get Recruiters To Actually Read Your Resume How To Get Recruiters To Actually Read Your Resume You may think that a recruiter or hiring manager will read your resume from top to bottom as soon as they receive it. They wonât. You may also think that every, single, thing youâve done over the last 20 years is important. Itâs not. Most readers will quickly scan your resume looking for information relevant to the job they are trying to fill. A first read generally lasts only a few minutes. If your resume is 3-5 pages, they may not review the entire document. In most cases, only if a recruiter or hiring manager likes what theyâve found on the initial scan will they read the entire resume. While there are mixed opinions on how long a resume should be â" no oneâs resume needs to be seven or eight pages. Yes, when I was working as a recruiter I saw them. I still see them today. The general rule for resumes is 1-2 pages for new grads and early careerists, 2 pages for everyone else, even senior executives and C-Suite. Extensive publications, speaking, etc. can be added in an addendum. Make sure your resume demonstrates value â" what you can offer your next employer â" immediately. Think about newspapers, print and online, the most important articles are above the fold. Your resume should focus on the last 10-15 years of your career, with the most attention paid to your current or most recent position. Think of your resume like a funnel where much less space is allotted as you move back in your career. Eliminate things like hobbies. Unless youâre applying for a job with a dance studio, no one cares that youâre an avid salsa dancer. Ditto for golf, tennis, etc. unless part of your job is making deals on the golf course. Once youâve finished writing your resume review it objectively. Read through the content giving it the âso what?â test. If it doesnât pass the âso what?â test rethink, rewrite, or remove it.

Creating A New Graduate Resume
Creating A New Graduate ResumeIf you are a recent graduate with your eye on landing a good job, a new career or a promotion in the future, you should look into the idea of creating a new graduate resume. This will help you stand out and be more appreciated. It is also a way for you to show that you have some new skills or have made a really great move forward. One common mistake people make when they start a new job is to save their old resume. Instead of sending in a new one they keep the old one. This can get very annoying as you get to the point where you do not even remember what kind of job you were doing in the first place. Just imagine a long list of jobs that could have suited you, but instead they took the popular route. To avoid this, you should make sure you have a recent graduate resume ready before you go out looking for jobs. You want to make it as professional looking as possible. Make sure you also include all of your work history, grades, job title and any relevant job s which may be relevant. At least you will have something to focus on.Another thing you need to consider is how much experience you have had with the company you are applying for. If they are currently looking for applicants, make sure you ask them if you would fit in. If you already know the company, you might have to explain your current situation before you can make an application. This is a good chance to talk about the last job you held or the present job.A recent graduate resume should contain all the important information about you. Make sure you mention your education level, the types of skills you have, what you have done with these skills before, any qualifications, experience and any highlights you may have. You should also describe your work experience, skills and job titles. In particular, you should explain how you got the job.In most cases, you will only have a short time to sell yourself and it is not always easy to relate your work to the job you are applying for. I n such situations, you should try to explain what you do best, and offer up some details about what you can do for the company. It is important that you do not oversell yourself, and just focus on what you do well.Using such documents to give potential employers an idea of your capabilities is a smart move. Not only will it help you secure a job, but also helps to attract the attention of the hiring manager. This can be a really good advantage if you have landed a job.

Google Why Free Speech Didnt Save Engineers Job
Google Why Free Speech Didn't Save Engineer's Job After a memo proclaiming women are underrepresented in tech because of biological differences between the sexes and not because of discrimination went viral, a Google employee is now out of a job in whatâs become one of the most public firings of the year. As with anything provocative (and tech-related), social media is aflame with differing opinions on whether or not circulating a memo disparaging the core values of your company is a fireable offense. So is it? Those who donât support firing the engineer who wrote the memo say that dissenting opinions are good for businesses, and that no one should be fired for exercising their right to free speech. Unfortunately, you donât actually have any free speech rights in the workplace. The First Amendment limits the governmentâs ability to suppress free speech, not an employerâs. If youâre an at-will employee, which most Americans are (unless youâre in a union), your boss can fire you for pretty much any reason. (The only people exempted from this are those employed by the government.) The Constitution does not guarantee you employment. As Bloomberg Businessweek notes, federal statutes âlimit companiesâ rights to fire or hire workers and prevent them from joining unions ⦠based only on race, religion, ethnicity, sex, age, and a few other protected categories.â Beyond that, though, employees can be fired for pretty much any reason. (A few states have limited protections for political speech, per the American Bar Association.) In a letter to employees, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said the engineer was fired not for simply expressing unpopular opinions, but for perpetuating âharmful gender stereotypes in our workplaceâ and violating the companyâs Code of Conduct, adding, The memo has clearly impacted our co-workers, some of whom are hurting and feel judged based on their gender. Our co-workers shouldnât have to worry that each time they open their mouths to speak in a meeting, they have to prove that they are not like the memo states, being âagreeableâ rather than âassertive,â showing a âlower stress tolerance,â or being âneurotic.â Creating a hostile work environment, as people are suggesting Damore did, is certainly grounds for termination. It also comes at a time when Silicon Valley is facing repeated criticism for gender discrimination (Uber anyone?) and for Google, this has become a PR and HR nightmare. His actions likely caused lost productivity company-wide, and as Pichai noted, are having tremendously negative impacts on his co-workers, including reportedly causing some to consider leaving the company. The big issue with this case is that the memo was not circulated among a small group of people or posted privately. No one exposed the manâs beliefs against his will. He purposefully sent them out to the entire company, on a work platform, and directly questioned the judgment of his managers and the leaders of the company, in addition to informing his female coworkers that he viewed them as biologically incapable of doing their job well. Whether or not companies and bosses should fire employees because of these types of actions and politically incorrect rhetoric is a different question entirely. The laws are clear, and itâs not just Google where that type of behavior wouldnât be tolerated.

Try to recognize you need to build more of it and work towards getting rid of your self doubt. If you canât start building confidence where you work, try doing it outside of work to get you started, and have a plan to keep you on track and in control. 5 Really Good Reasons to Practice Toy Minimalism at Your House A burgeoning body of research suggests that minimalism is a positive way of life. In fact, studies consistently find that minimalism can lead to happiness.Thats why many parents are practicing toy minimalism with their children. Here are five good reasons to give it a shot with your own little ones.1. Cleared clutter helps your mental health.A wealth of research shows that clean spaces really help you to be more productive. For mothers who may be busy with work and parenting, for example, having a clear home can really clear their minds, as well. In fact, one study by Harvard University explored the productivity of students who were each tasked with working in different environments (with different degrees of clutter), and it found that clean spaces actually leads to peoples ability to work longer.2. A child with less toys plays with their phantasie more.Research shows that children with less toys have bigger imaginations . Thats because they need to develop the creative skills necessary to keep themselves entertained with the same toys. These creative skills, of course, translate later in life.A German project called Der Spielzeugfreie Kindergarten (the nursery without toys) set out to see what would happen if they took all the toys away from kindergarten kids for three months. On the first day, the children seemed confused, but after a few days, they began playing with blankets and chairs, making forts and creating their own fun.3. Less toys means having to share more a valuable lesson. Its inevitable that the less toys a child has, the more theyll have to share their toys with siblings or friends because they less there are to go around. Sharing is a valuable lesson children need to learn early on, and teaching them to take turns with their toys is a surefire way to teach them it.4. A minimalistic life teaches you and your children to appreciate non-material things.Minimalism is, by definition, th e subtraction of material things to teach you what matters most in life. What Minimalism is really all about is reassessment of your priorities so that you can strip away the excess stuff the possessions and ideas and relationships and activities that dont bring value to your life, according to The Minimalists. Therefore, practicing minimalism with your children from a young age can teach them the importance of non-material things. The less toys they have, the more theyll have to play with their friends and siblings, teaching them the importance of connections, for example.5. Your child will learn to love the toys they do have more.If your child has multiple toys, theyll switch between them, playing with all or probably most of them. But, if your child only has one or a few toys, theyll spend more time playing with those toys. Therefore, theyll inevitably develop a deeper appreciation for the things that they have. If they dont, thats a lesson theyll have to learn in the process to be grateful for what they do have instead of to be focused on what they dont have.--AnnaMarie Houlis is a feminist, a freelance journalist and an adventure aficionado with an affinity for impulsive solo travel.
