So too do the old fashioned misconceptions that STEM jobs themselves are dull, and involve sitting in front of a computer or a lab for hours on end, or are confined only to academics and require zero creativity. The reality couldn’t be more different. I recall chatting to a teenager who told me how he loved video gaming but dismissed any kind of STEM career, citing it as boring. When I asked him who he thought had designed and built his beloved games, or the apps he spent hours using on his phone, the penny dropped that engineering could be cool after all. We need more people to make that connection. STEM professionals really do work on the cutting edge; they are solving real-world problems every day and are playing a key role in shaping our future. These career paths are actually some of the most impactful and exciting around, but sadly this doesn’t seem to be common knowledge. I think as parents, family members and friends, we all need to play our part in busting these myths at home. But, changing these perspectives and encouraging more young people into STEM is also the responsibility of our educational institutions, governments and businesses. All three must do far more to present STEM as an attractive, accessible option for the next generation, and provide real opportunities and experiences which young people feel compelled to seize with both hands. Schools must energise STEM ambitions But how do we start to fix this? In my opinion, there’s a lot more schools should be doing to address what is, I think, a crisis that is facing our world of work. Firstly, career counselling in schools should be far more robust and better aligned to the needs of business. And I can speak from personal experience here I pursued engineering on the advice of my teachers and parents, who pointed out that the qualification would bring a breadth of opportunities and the flexibility to cross sectors throughout my career. So true and this same advice has never been more relevant or important than today. STEM-related industries are currently experiencing a boom period which is only set to intensify according to estimates the app industry alone is predicted to be worth $6.3trillion by 2021, while AI is expected to add $15trillion to the global economy by 2030. If our future generations are to take advantage of this growth, we need our schools and universities to advise pupils of the opportunities that subjects such as maths or science can offer. These documents would be interesting, relevant, and just plain “bad ass”. Could they possibly fit all their accomplishments on one page? Highly doubtful.When you apply for the position of Renaissance Man or Genius, you are going to have some shit to list. If you are applying for an entry-level position, I don’t expect to see 3-4 pages. If you have 3-4 pages worth of accomplishments, you are overqualified and that is a ding against you. First, the document is not balanced when there is empty space (subconscious score). Second and more importantly, you just said “I have the opportunity to tell you what I have accomplished but chose to leave it blank. The only conclusion I can come to is that you “got nothin”, or you are lazy. If you are at 1.25 pages, widen the margins, top, bottom, and side and change the font and font size if needed to shrink it down to a 1-page resume. If you are at 1.75 pages, then do the opposite. Fill two pages!!! 1.75 pages is not good. I have seen great resumes that are two pages long from folks that are still in school and 1 page resumes from folks working for 5 years or more. Just think quality, not quantity. If you are going to list a number of years of experience one way you can keep the illusion of progression and related experience to your experience is by having the most number of bullet points for your most recent experience and the least amount of bullet points for the earliest experience listed. If you still want to apply for a job, look for people on LinkedIn who “look like you” and find out where they work. Those are potential employers. The key is to go talk to employees or freelancers about how they get work. Freelance groups have business workshops. [10:32] Q2: I just turned 60. Unless I can find someone to take care of me financially, I will have to return to work. I have a Project Management Planner (PMP) certificate, but every job seems to require a BA. I don’t want additional debt. What are my options? [10:52] A2: A PMP is sufficient. Put on the application, “20 years of experience in lieu of a BA,” or BS, (whichever they specify). That gets you honestly past the applicant tracker. Do not lie. [11:51] Q3: I am not having any luck finding employment. I am qualified to be an HR manager, but I don’t want a management role. I have applied to non-managerial positions in HR and had a couple of interviews but no offers. Money is not a problem. I am willing to work for much less than I have in the past. Fundraising is different from sales. Volunteer management is not HR. You will have to build relationships at the nonprofit by serving on a board or volunteering. They are often dysfunctional. The general rule for resumes is 1-2 pages for new grads and early careerists, 2 pages for everyone else, even senior executives and C-Suite.  Extensive publications, speaking, etc. can be added in an addendum. Make sure your resume demonstrates value â€" what you can offer your next employer â€" immediately. Think about newspapers, print and online, the most important articles are above the fold. Your resume should focus on the last 10-15 years of your career, with the most attention paid to your current or most recent position. Think of your resume like a funnel where much less space is allotted as you move back in your career. Eliminate things like hobbies.
