Self-education will make you a fortune. Todays career tip: Invest in  educating yourself.  Self-education is where its at! I did the formal education  routine. Got my MBA and a great job.  But, when it came time to start my own online business, I did  most of the educating myself. Its funny because I talk to a lot of women who have their eye on business school or grad school because they feel like they should. But, when I ask them what they want to do after grad schoolthey have no idea. It was the same with me!  I had my eye on the top business schools and acing that darn GMAT. But, I had no idea what I was going to do after business school. Silly me! What is now making me a fortune is my own knowledge from reading a book almost every week for the last 5 years.  I created my own start-up school and I recommend you do too! Your homework: Write down what education you want to get in 2015. What skills and knowledge are you lacking in? Daniel, how did you get started in social media in the first place? Why did it interest you as a teenager? There are lots of freelance gigs. Marc suggests looking at Upworks and other freelance broker sites. They have a rating system, so you need to get some gigs on there and get good ratings. Look for local freelance groups and creative meetups. [7:07] Look at creative communities, such as Adobe users. These will vary by location. If you still want to apply for a job, look for people on LinkedIn who “look like you” and find out where they work. Those are potential employers. The key is to go talk to employees or freelancers about how they get work. Freelance groups have business workshops. [10:32] Q2: I just turned 60. Unless I can find someone to take care of me financially, I will have to return to work. I have a Project Management Planner (PMP) certificate, but every job seems to require a BA. I don’t want additional debt. What are my options? [10:52] A2: A PMP is sufficient. Put on the application, “20 years of experience in lieu of a BA,” or BS, (whichever they specify). That gets you honestly past the applicant tracker. Do not lie. [11:51] Q3: I am not having any luck finding employment. I am qualified to be an HR manager, but I don’t want a management role. I have applied to non-managerial positions in HR and had a couple of interviews but no offers. Money is not a problem. I am willing to work for much less than I have in the past. I would like to work at a Non-Profit. [12:42] A3: There are multiple pieces to this. No one is going to believe that you are willing to work for less money. If you go back into the for-profit world in the second half of life, it’s going to come down to a relationship that you already have or can resurrect or build. To work in the nonprofit world takes completely different skills than for profit. [14:28] Marc suggests first seeking a nonprofit certificate program at a community college. Fundraising is different from sales. Volunteer management is not HR. You will have to build relationships at the nonprofit by serving on a board or volunteering. They are often dysfunctional. Figure out which one you could tolerate with its dysfunctions. [17:07] Elizabeth has worked on nonprofit boards. She recommends building your network by volunteering. There may be a lot of uncertainty and you may need flexibility. [18:01] Marc serves on the board of one nonprofit, Launchpad Job Club, and the President hates to ask for money. Money is necessary for a nonprofit. Marc notes that getting to a size where employees are paid is a big, difficult change for an NFP. How To Get Recruiters To Actually Read Your Resume How To Get Recruiters To Actually Read Your Resume You may think that a recruiter or hiring manager will read your resume from top to bottom as soon as they receive it. They won’t. You may also think that every, single, thing you’ve done over the last 20 years is important. It’s not. Most readers will quickly scan your resume looking for information relevant to the job they are trying to fill.  A first read generally lasts only a few minutes. If your resume is 3-5 pages, they may not review the entire document. In most cases, only if a recruiter or hiring manager likes what they’ve found on the initial scan will they read the entire resume. While there are mixed opinions on how long a resume should be â€" no one’s resume needs to be seven or eight pages. Yes, when I was working as a recruiter I saw them. I still see them today. The general rule for resumes is 1-2 pages for new grads and early careerists, 2 pages for everyone else, even senior executives and C-Suite.  Extensive publications, speaking, etc. can be added in an addendum. Make sure your resume demonstrates value â€" what you can offer your next employer â€" immediately. Think about newspapers, print and online, the most important articles are above the fold. Your resume should focus on the last 10-15 years of your career, with the most attention paid to your current or most recent position. Think of your resume like a funnel where much less space is allotted as you move back in your career. Eliminate things like hobbies. Unless you’re applying for a job with a dance studio, no one cares that you’re an avid salsa dancer. Ditto for golf, tennis, etc. unless part of your job is making deals on the golf course. Once you’ve finished writing your resume review it objectively. Read through the content giving it the “so what?” test. If it doesn’t pass the “so what?” test rethink, rewrite, or remove it.
